Macclesfield Silk Museum

This fascinating museum is a testament to Macclesfield's silk heritage. Housed within a former Sunday school, built in 1813, it guides visitors through the development of the industry in the town, once the centre of British Silk. The museum depicts the booms and slumps of the industry through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and how the emigration from Macclesfield to Patterson, New Jersey, provided the foundation of the American silk industry. Paradise Mill, within walking distance of the Silk Museum, is a living museum with its jacquard silk handlooms, still in their original setting. It was a working silk mill until 1981, specialising in high quality tie fabric. In Paradise Mill you will be welcomed by knowledgeable and entertaining guides who will demonstrate how silk cloths, with their intricate designs, were manufactured. The Silk Museum has a silk shop with an extensive range of attractive silk gifts, many produced in Macclesfield.
